- South wins the lead, cashes the Ace of hearts, four club tricks and plays the spade Ace discarding the Q from dummy to reach this end position:-
- Declarer plays the spade 9:
- (i) if West discards a heart the trick is won by dummy’s 10 in order to preserve an entry for the last heart trick:
- (ii) if West discards a diamond dummy’s K spade wins in order to create an entry back to South for the extra diamond trick
